The last day of January ended on a cold note with another morning at -32 degrees and still below zero as the day ended. But with less wind, the wind chills weren’t as extreme but it will be nice when it gets above freezing.
Frozen Falls Inside a Cave
Old Man Winter definitely has his teeth biting into the Midwest with the -60 wind chills overnight and hasn’t loosen his grip today either.
Bite of Winter
This afternoon’s wind chills were colder than the day I hike miles across Lake Superior to view the ice formations even though it was a cold day too where some of the ice was turning blue. I might be a little wimpier in my older years as I don’t think I would have tried the walk on a day as cold as it was today or will be tomorrow even to see something so interesting.

The snow overnight and this morning caused most of the area schools to close because of the weather so many some of the kids enjoyed the new snow before the temperature makes its plunge tonight.
More Snow
The clouds rolled in before sunset as the snow storm made its approach this evening but today view was a lot different than when I hiked on Lake Superior’s frozen surface.

Some light snow was falling today and the flakes are lighter than one of these icicles, which you wouldn’t want one to drop on your head.

The frigid temperatures today reminded me of the day I hike out on the frozen Lake Superior to view the ice caves. I knew there was very cold wind chills over the lake when my camera lens would fog up whenever I went inside an icy cave and I used hand warmers to kept my camera batteries warm enough to work.

The sun peeked out in between snow showers but the wind whipped the snow around to make it seem like it was snowing longer and there was even some like cyclones of snow spinning up into the air. On an icy day, like this photo, the snow couldn’t blow around with the ice layer holding it down.

This cat looks like she heard about the extreme cold weather which will be around for a while. But instead of beating her head against a brick, she should be looking for a warm blanket in front of a fireplace.
Bad News Kitty
The light snow today was creating a new white layer on the ground, reducing color from the landscape during the winter months so it will be a while before there will the range of color bursting out in the yard.
