Over the holiday weekend, the Apostle Islands Station of the Wayzata Yacht Club held their Spring Series Regatta on Lake Superior in Bayfield, Wisconsin and the water was filled with colorful boats as they raced towards the finish line.

The Pasque flower is an early spring flower, which is still blooming on the shore of Lake Superior since the spring growing season starts later than in my home area.

There are many Memorial Day services today honoring veterans who have passed away while serving in the military. The program I attended this year had members of the local American Legion with a school band and an individual playing the bag pipes.

The holiday Sunday have people enjoying a beach, but they weren’t the only on the beach today as these shore birds were busy finding a snack.

The bright yellow feathers of the Yellow Warbler catches your eye but it is hard to photo this little bird as it hops around quickly looking for bugs. The females are less colorful and lack the chestnut stripes that the males have. But this warbler better watch where it lands in the tall grass as some have been caught in the strands of an orb weaver spider’s web.

More butterflies have been spotted as the spring flowers have opened. A Tiger Swallowtail was visiting my lilacs that were just starting to open before taking a rest break on the pine tree. The larger female is more colorful than the male as it has more blue spots on its wing.

It was naptime for this Hereford calf on a sunny afternoon.

The later arriving birds are still building their nests, and I like this oriole nest that used grass, plastic pieces from an old tarp, dried cattails leaves, string and even the bright red string which she poked through leaving the loops of string. It amazes me how they can get even building material attached to swaying limbs to start with before filling it in.

Some birds were upset when I was mowing as they were scared off their nest and I spotted some blue egg shells on the ground. These very young robins don’t look too cute as they wait for a snack from their parents.

The sun was another pink ball in the sky as it has been for a while from the smoke in the air from the fires in Canada. I’m not sure when the winds will shift and blow the smoke away again to allow seeing a more normal sunset.
