The Labor Day weekend, the birds heading south, the start of school and one of the final signs that summer is over is trees showing autumn colors. This tree always has sections of green leaves when other sections are displaying the bright red colors, almost in a Christmas theme. But while I love the autumn colors, I’m not ready for summer to be over yet.

Another sign that summer is over beside school starting, is the disappearance of some birds, like the house wren and orioles. So there will be no splash of bright orange feathers on my porch until next year when the orioles come back in the spring and find my feeders again.

With school starting soon for some students and the long holiday approaching, some people are trying to get the last vacation in before the unofficial end of summer. And some vacation activities may include water adventures on the lakes, like on Lake Superior near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore to view different rock formations and waterfalls..

Yesterday I visited the Basilica of Saint Mary and the Cathedral of Saint Paul and with so much to see, you might forget to look up. This is the interior side of the cathedral’s dome, which is 96 feet in diameter and 175 feet high. There are 24 stained glass windows of the angelic choirs and a eight-pointed chandelier to light the dome.

The skies darkened as rain moved through today but the sun reappeared to shine on the the cheerful Black-eyed Susan blossoms.

Man’s best friend has been around for more than 14,000 years when the dog’s evolution split from wolves to become the domesticated critter so many have bonded with today. And love for dogs is celebrated today being National Dog Day.

Two of my cats are celebrating their 5th birthday today and they may be older but they still like to play with boxes as they did when they were a kitten. Boxes provided me many hours of fun as a kid too.
