One thing about the warm winter rain is that the pond ice melted and frost came back out which allowed the owl living in my wood duck box to add a little variety to its Christmas dinner as it caught a frog that normally would be burrowed down deep for the winter.

It wasn’t a white Christmas or even a brown Christmas this year, but with the rain and temperatures in the 50s, the grass looked green again so it was a green Christmas.

While some wanted a white Christmas, I was happy there wasn’t snow on the ground and the white found was just some poplar tree trunks.

With the leaves off most of the trees, it is easier to spot old bird nests high up in the limbs, although some of them probably will be on the ground by springtime and the returning birds will have to build new homes.

The first day of winter looked more like autumn this year without the normal snow on the ground and it had me wishing the warm temperatures would continue.

The fast flowing water and warm temperatures have melted the ice on the river, although my pond still remains frozen.

The tamarack would not make a very good pine tree for Christmas since the tamarack turns yellow in autumn and drop their needles so they would be rather bare looking even at the start of the Christmas season.

The colder day after yesterday’s warm temperature caused some icicles to form again.

There was some rain overnight but not enough to overflow the pond like this photo from a few years ago. The rain didn’t melt the ice layer on the pond either, but it might have polished the ice some more.
